babel

Babel is an interactive installation that allows users to interact with narrative fragments, contributed by multiple authors. Different versions of a proposed script are recorded by multiple authors and stored in a database. The users of the installation retrieve the contributed content, explore it and recompose it, thus articulating a unique trajectory in the narrative space. The interaction occurs through an intuitive computer vision interface, which employs the light of a torch.

The installation aims in exploring the ways that the narrator’s point of view, her cultural context and political ideas, her references and intentions, influence the narration. For this purpose various versions of the same story were filmed by different video-authors. The final narration is a dialogue between the authors and the viewer, a kind of collage of opinions, viewpoints, languages and videographic styles. Babel questions the conventional, centralized role of the director and suggests an horizontal, collective model of video-narration.

The story was based on the text “Serially Killed” written by the writer and blogger Old Boy: http://old-boy.blogspot.com/. The story is about death, life and it’s circular character, chaos, numbers and their secret interpretations, human decisions, obsessions and repeated errors..
