HOM(M)ELESS // Men without home ~ Buildings without men (hommes).
Hom(m)less is an allegoric object and a data-driven construction.
The movable parts of a DIY interactive construction are controlled by an open hardware circuit consisting of an Arduino microcontroller and two servo motors. The construction is being customized in real-time according to the data input retrieved from online open data resources.
The public building indignant because of its misuse decides to transform itself, in order to cover the real public common needs. Homeless people’s figures have increased considerably during the last years in Athens, while a large number of public buildings remain closed and abandoned.
The construction of hom(m)less is a model of a public building with a movable ceiling. It receives data concerning the abandoned public buildings and the approximate number of homeless people in the city. The ratio of abandoned public buildings to homeless people is mapped to the rotation angle of the ceiling. According to this ratio, the ceiling rotates towards the exterior of the building, thus covering the homeless people’s need for shelter, leaving uncovered the interior of the building which is empty anyway.
